What began as an effort to bring authentic futsal to the Madison area has grown into something larger: a development program built around the belief that the lessons learned in a fast, demanding game can extend well beyond the court.

Madison Futsal was founded and is led by Ilir Lushaj, whose background includes a UEFA Futsal B Diploma, a U.S. Soccer National B coaching license and futsal education in both the United States and Europe. An archived presentation from more than a decade ago shows the program's early mission clearly: create a fun learning environment where area youth and adult players could use futsal to take their soccer skills to another level.

Over time, that mission became more ambitious.

A 2019 local newspaper story credited Madison Futsal with introducing futsal to Dane County and highlighted not only the technical benefits of the program, but also its emphasis on leadership, discipline and persistence. Today, Madison Futsal serves club and community teams across Dane County and Wisconsin through leagues, tournaments and development programming.

But the organization's story isn't really about producing another place for kids to play soccer indoors.

It is about why they play.

Madison Futsal's philosophy puts development ahead of appearances. Its Code of Excellence emphasizes authentic training, education and research rather than what it describes as an emphasis on "shiny uniforms, buildings & materials." Its stated purpose is equally revealing: to create excellence and joy in both sports and life.

That philosophy fits naturally with futsal itself.

Played in tight spaces with a smaller, low-bounce ball, futsal continually puts players in situations where they have to solve problems. There are more touches, more decisions and more opportunities to make—and recover from—mistakes. Madison Futsal sees those moments as opportunities to develop creativity, decision-making and technical ability, not simply to produce a winning score.

The same attention extends to the environment surrounding the players. Madison Futsal emphasizes monitored games, trained officials, SafeSport standards and ongoing referee development. Its leadership team also reaches beyond traditional coaching, including expertise in officiating and sport psychology alongside international futsal experience.

The result is a program trying to redefine what development looks like.

Winning matters. Skill matters. Competition matters. But so do respect, work ethic, resilience, relationships and the ability to remain united when a game—or life—becomes difficult. Madison Futsal's core values center on joy and respect, being industrious and willing to learn, cohesion and endurance.

Now the program is entering another chapter. The Forge Sports Center in Madison is being built as a home for Madison Futsal and Forge Academy, with two international-sized futsal courts and spaces designed not only for training and competition, but also for gathering and community.

In some ways, it is a long way from the program's beginnings. In another, the idea hasn't changed much at all.

Give players a ball. Give them a demanding environment. Surround them with people who care about how they develop. Then allow thousands of small decisions, mistakes, successes and relationships to shape them.

Because at Madison Futsal, the goal has never been simply to create better futsal players.

It is to use the game to help build better players, better teammates and stronger people and to make sure they find joy along the way.
